Grimsby Amateur Baseball Association (GABA) President Jen Lawson accepted a grant from Niagara Region Health Promoter for the Tobacco Control Program Gillian McDonald to help develop, implement and promote a tobacco-free sport & recreation policy for Grimsby Amateur Baseball Association (GABA).
“GABA is excited to partner with Niagara Region Health on this important project. Not only is being tobacco-free part of our mission and vision statement but the timing fits perfectly with the exciting initiatives we’re pursuing for the 2012 Season.” Said Lawson.
The new GABA Executive elected last October has already started planning a variety of events like umpiring clinics and Swing into Safety Fun Day with the Grimsby Fire Department, Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office and Toronto Blue Jays to name a few.
Lawson also noted “Another initiative is we’re looking to expand our program to include Beamsville and Smithville residents since they don’t have softball in their area and depending on interest, we hope to offer softball/slo-pitch to adults under the age of 30. Grimsby, Beamsville and Smithville residents over 30 can choose various leagues for ladies, men’s or co-ed and if you’re between 5 and 20 you can play hardball or softball, but no one offers anything for 20-30 year olds.”
GABA’s Tobacco-free Policy is now in effect for all GABA games, practices and events. Lawson says “The next step is to approach Council and ask them to adopt a smoke-free outdoor spaces by-law like Niagara Falls Council has recently done.”
GABA registration is now open and registration days are being held on Sat Feb 4 and Sat Feb 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Grimsby Seniors Centre. Players interested in learning more about the new league, umpiring or other initiatives can go to GABA’s new website grimsbybaseball.ca or email info@grimsbybaseball.ca.
GABA is the largest youth softball organization in the Niagara Region.
