Thirty (30) Softball Associations Ready to 'Get In The Game'!

2012 Get In The Game SymposiumSoftball Ontario is thrilled to announce that thirty (30) Softball Associations have committed to sending representatives to the 6th annual Get In The Game Symposium on Saturday February 25, 2012 at the Sport Alliance Building in Toronto!  Participants in the Get In The Game Symposium will have the opportunity to have a voice in the development of grassroots softball in Ontario, while also learning how to better their own Association.

Community Event Kits Available For Your Association’s Registration Events

Is your Softball Association holding registration dates in the local mall, arena, or another public venue?  Are you looking for ways to encourage more children to register to play softball in 2012?  Softball Ontario is here to help you!  To assist Softball Associations with increasing registrations in 2012, Softball Ontario is making Community Event Kits available to Softball Associations across Ontario.

How do you qualify to receive a Softball Promotional Kit? 
It’s easy!  To qualify, make sure your Softball Association is a member of the Play Softball Network.  Qualifying events must be held in a public venue and you will need to submit an Event Report to Softball Ontario following your event.

Grimsby Amateur Baseball Association (GABA) President Jen Lawson accepted a grant from Niagara Region Health Promoter for the Tobacco Control Program Gillian McDonald to help develop, implement and promote a tobacco-free sport & recreation policy for Grimsby Amateur Baseball Association (GABA).

Two (2) Week Extention for SAFE AWARD Applications!
Twelve (12) Softball Association Fundamental Excellence (SAFE) Awards are available to qualifying Softball Associations between January 9, 2012 and January 23, 2012!

What is a SAFE Award?
A Softball Association Fundamental Excellence Award is an award of $500 for Softball Associations to use in one of four (4) categories:
  • Volunteer Development
  • Community Coach Development
  • Competitive Coach Development
  • Umpire Development
The Awards will help Softball Associations to train volunteers for the 2012 softball season, thereby increasing their volunteer capacity and the quality of their programs. Softball Associations receiving a SAFE Award will receive a special presentation of a SAFE Award Plaque at one of their Softball Association’s events. In addition, the SAFE Award will help Softball Associations to work towards improving their SAFE STAR Rating!

Batting/Pitching Machine Safety
This spring, we suffered a small tragedy in Arthur. A ball lodged in the chute of our batting machine and an Arthur Minor Softball player put their hand in to retrieve it, when the machine in motion. Fortunately, a few moments earlier, the machine had been turned off. Had the machine been turned on, they may have found themselves grabbed again and again by the machine.

Two fingers & a thumb were crushed. Tendons terribly stretched (not severed though). The bone across the back of the hand broke. Nerves were damaged. Surgery, pinning and a very long recovery period were required. No law suit resulted, as it was the President’s (Arthur Minor Softball) child. This ‘child’ was 16 years old.
